HAVE FUN WITH ENGLISH

CH-44 HAVE FUN WITH ENGLISH

Alternate Title: HAVE FUN WITH READING

Remember the word "onomatopoeia" from your college English classes?  It may be a mouthful to say, but it sure is fun to use when writing a choral speaking/reading script!  This script is written with English words that, when spoken aloud, sound like what they mean and also with phrases that encourages readers to create special moods using their voices, facial expressions, and body postures.

--------------------------------------

Onomatopoeia is defined as:

(1) The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss).
(2 )The use of words whose sound suggests the sense.

The script was originally written as a special request from a college education student in Malaysia.  His department was sponsoring an  EFL "Have Fun With English Day"  and he wanted a script that did just that.  The script turned out to be so much fun that we thought it could be used by EFL, ESL, and other English Speaking Voice Choirs everywhere.  We hope you feel the same.

Some Sample Text:

ALL: Have fun with English!  OR: Have fun with reading!
Make your voices heard.
Ringing voices, all in chorus
Speaking English words.

Experiment with English! OR: Experiment with reading!
Play with what you say.
Since English isn’t easy,  OR: Reading isn't always easy,
Have some fun along the way!  OR: So have fun along the way!

ALL VOICES IN
THE FRONT ROW:
For example:

ALL FEMALE VOICES: We can speak out loudly

(Spoken very loudly):

ALL MALE VOICES: SPEAK THOSE WORDS OUT LOUD!

ALL FEMALE VOICES: Stop!
Speaking out that loudly
Just shouldn’t be allowed.

ALL: And we can speak out softly,
Or whisper in your ear.

(Half of the chorus members turn and whisper in each other’s ears).

OTHER HALF OF CHORUS: No!
When you speak that softly,
No one else can hear.

ALL MALE VOICES: We can speak quite rapidly,

(Spoken very fast):

ALL FEMALE VOICES: Just like a speeding train.

ALL MALE VOICES: Or say the words quite slowly,

(Spoken slowly):

ALL: Just - like - a – clogged – up - drain.
