PL-1 THE FIFTH WITCH, Puppet Play
This puppet script has been written as a Halloween play, but may also be performed on any other occasion by simply leaving out the references to Halloween. A king has tired of his devoted Court Wizard, Merlin, and decides he wants a Court Witch instead. Merlin plans to teach the king a lesson about loyalty and, before leaving, hires the replacement himself. He teaches the king a "magic chant" to summon the witch whenever he wants. The king, however, doesn't like the first witch who appears, and demands another. In the end, five witches (each a little larger and louder than the one before) come and go, but not before one of them turns the king into a fish! Merlin, of course, saves the day.
PUPPETS NEEDED: King, wizard, fish, and 5 witches of varying size.
PUPPETEERS NEEDED: Since there are never more than two puppets on stage at the same time, the play may be performed by a single puppeteer. Depending on how much room there is behind the puppet stage, it may also be performed by two or more puppeteers.
NUMBER OF SCRIPT PAGES: 9 ½ including director/teacher's notes and suggested puppet blocking.
NOTE: If necessary, the script may be shortened by eliminating one of the witches and calling the script THE FOURTH WITCH.

PL-2 THE SHOEMAKER AND THE ELVES, Puppet Play
This puppet script has been written as a Christmas play, but may also be performed on any other occasion by simply changing the references to Thanksgiving, Easter, Mother's Day, or even the Shoemaker's wife's birthday! The script follows the traditional fairy tale plot and includes visits from a hungry traveler, with whom the couple share the last of their meager food, two thoughtless and unkind customers, and as many wonderful elves as you care to create. Moral of the story: What goes around, comes around
PUPPETS NEEDED: Shoemaker, wife, haughty lady, nasty man, and as many elves as you wish.
PUPPETEERS NEEDED: Since there are never more than two puppets on stage at the same time, the play may be performed by a single puppeteer. Depending on how much room there is behind the puppet stage, it may also be performed by two or more puppeteers.
NUMBER OF SCRIPT PAGES: 8 including director/teacher's notes and suggested blocking.
NOTE: If necessary, the script may be shortened by eliminating one of the nasty customers who come to call.

PL-3 THE FISHERMAN AND HIS WIFE, Puppet Play
A traditional scripting of the age-old tale of a fisherman, his unhappy wife, and a magical fish that grants three wishes. A simple cottage and a castle (or painted backdrops of them) are needed to set the scenes. As each wish is granted, the fisherman's wife is not satisfied and wants more! Finally the exasperated fish takes away everything he has given and the wife learns "it is not good to spend your life wanting more than you need". Not a bad lesson for these troubled times!
PUPPETS NEEDED: Fisherman, wife (two puppets for the wife, one in rags and one dressed as a queen), and one brightly colored fish.
PUPPETEERS NEEDED: Since there are never more than two puppets on stage at the same time, the play may be performed by a single puppeteer. Depending on how much room there is behind the puppet stage, it may also be performed by two or more puppeteers.
NUMBER OF SCRIPT PAGES: 9 ½ including director/teacher's notes and suggested blocking.
NOTE: An additional prop, a fishing net, is needed for the fisherman.

PL-5 HANSEL AND GRETEL, Puppet Play
A masterful re-telling of this well-known tale. This script is worthy of a full-fledged production involving puppeteers, backstage help with sets and props, sound effects, music, and special lighting. Your students might want to rehearse this one to perfection and perform it for parents or other classes. This is also a script which teen or adult puppeteers will find worthy of performance.
PUPPETS NEEDED: Hansel, Gretel, Mother, Father, Snowball the Cat, and Witch
PUPPETEERS NEEDED: Since there are never more than two puppets on stage at the same time, the play may be performed by a single puppeteer. Depending on how much room there is behind the puppet stage, it may also be performed by two or more puppeteers.

PL-6 THE SIGN-UP!
During recess, two puppets set up tables near the principal’s office and attempt to sign students up for two different teams:
The DO TEAM and The DON’T TEAM.
Each puppet wants to get the most sign-ups and thinks his/her team is better and totally different from the other.
In the end, it is the puppeteer who convinces them that their teams aren’t really so different after all! The puppets and puppeteer are “one and the same” and “all in this together” and symbolize family, school, team, community, county, and our world.
PUPPETS NEEDED: This puppet play has been written for two puppets and one puppeteer. The puppets can be any type you wish (people, animals, etc.) as long as they appeal to primary grade students.
STAGE: A traditional hand puppet stage (where the puppeteer is behind, below, and hidden from view) should be used. The character-building information included in the script was found on the Character Counts web site at:
